A brief overview of Creating Multiple Streams of photography Income on the internet

Following posts will contain detailed information of each of the sections to follow

So, this short report  is about maximising your income avenues from your photographic work. One of the best ways to do this is to use your own photographic website or websites, yes maybe more than one.

The big problem as I see it is that while you are actually behind the camera, working, you would generally know you are earning some pennies. But most people do not cost into their normal day rates the additional, hidden cost, of running a business, book keeping, telephone calls, advertising and marketing , let alone the time needed to be put in by you to carry out all these things and of course, if you don’t do these , then you have to pay someone that will do them.

Of course , if you can afford to have an office assistant , this then puts up your fees to the client, which may in turn have an adverse affect on your ability to get the work in , in the first place.

Now it may also be that you have an income from your existing stock images that you have built up, but of course not all photographers have this luxury and then of course there are plenty of royalty free images available on line more and then there is the worry of image theft on line.

I discuss what a typical stock agency may require in my ebook “photography income secrets revealed” and is explained in more detail. But for now, you need to know that when you first approach a stock agency that you may well be expected to supply a good number of images, just for starters. If you find this is a problem, then why not consider creating your own stock photography website.

( I have a Free regular newsletter that provides on going tips for marketing your own photography  website at http://www.photography-jobs.com)

Now I mentioned that you may need more than one website, why?

This is due to the fact that not all your photographic clients will be happy about the different types of photographic work that you do. If you have a wedding client for example, they may not be too bothered that you do work for publications, in fact they may be impressed. On the other hand if you shoot PR or advertising work, these clients may be very uneasy if you make them aware that you work for press or publications, they may have disclosure worries, especially with new products you may be shooting. In these cases, it may be worth the small additional cost of different stationary, different web address’s just to keep the two differing types of client well away from each other.

Apart from anything else, if you present your self as a commercial photographer to shoot furniture for a company and you have a portfolio of wedding images, will they be impressed, will they hire you, or will they likely use an experienced commercial photographer that has a track record of shooting products? I’ll leave you to decide.

Using your knowledge and experience of what you already know to create information products that you can sell online for immediate download. This is a perfect subject for the not so experienced photographer to get access into the online markets. There are literally millions of people all around the world that are looking for information, knowledge, wanting to learn how to do something  or avoid something or make something , Why not consider using the life time of learning you have already been through and teach others how to do the same thing you already know about.

So , what are you good at, what do you know that can help to solve other peoples problems, what is it , in your community that everyone comes to you for ?

This is a massive area for easy and quick online sales and profits and in the members area I will be showing you just how to go about researching what people are looking for online, how to create information products and then how to go about selling your products online at very little cost and then how to develop that business into regular , online , auto pilot sales.

Stock photography

More and more photographers are using this simple idea to provide additional sales of images that they have shot for both initial sales and after sales as stock images.

I have seen many stories online of photographers that simply shoot their subjects , be it at a wedding , public event or even just tourism hot spots, hand a card to the subject with a web address on and leave the subject to view the images on line, order and wait for their delivery of their prints.

Best of all , being a website, this is done at the convenience of the customers and benefit to the photographer

The other benefit here of course is that you get to keep all the profits, obviously less any printing costs, but no sharing your sale figures with the agency.

Of course, if you have time, there is nothing to stop you from making enhancements to any images that you put on line, add different variations to images, sepia tones, mono or greyscale images, use your imagination and create something unusual, providing it doesn’t take too long of course and you may be pleasantly surprised with the number of additional sales you make and generate some interest from your visitors as well.

Art houses and galleries

Use your website to create your own gallery of images for sale, or, create a small collection of prints, call them a limited edition and strike up a deal with a local gallery to sell your images there. The main thing to remember here is that usually galleries like to stick to images with a common theme and so you should plan along these lines.

Printing costs are getting better and although there are an abundance of good quality home desktop printers available now, it is usually still cheaper to use a print house, plus of course you will have restrictions on the physical size of print that you can produce from your home or small office machine.

There are other places where you can sell your printed images such as shopping malls or within a space insider a department store, library’s, schools , colleges and theatres.

Remember to keep the type or theme of the images in keeping with the place you are displaying in and you will have more chance of getting some good sales. Above all , make sure your images from your gallery are on your website.

Just because you make a website and put it online, doesn’t mean that it will be found or visited. Generating website traffic is a science in itself and is too detailed a subject for this book right now, but my regular newsletters have a great deal of useful tips and info that will help enhance and promote your photography site.

Finally if you intend to call a collection of images a limited edition, just consider that after you sell a predetermined number of prints, that’s it, end of sales, no more income, if you do, you will ruin your reputation and loose trust. The upside to this is that you can often charge more for a limited edition print that could otherwise.

Additional sales from events

Another good reason for using your website, is to consider all the other opportunities as events you shoot. Weddings for example, how many live bands, groups or singers have you seen, would they buy your images from the function, since you’re there already, shoot them, put the images on line, hand them a card  with web address info and let them see the images for themselves. Some will buy, some wont, shoot digital of course and your expenses for these additional shots are virtually nil.

What about the funeral director company or the flower arranging company, the chauffeured cars or the suit hire company, all these people may want to see your images and make a purchase for their own use, these are all additional sales you could make.

When you shoot a wedding or function, there is not just the bride and groom, there are often hundreds of people to shoot that very rarely have a good quality images of themselves and their partners let alone with other family members. Set up a small area to one side, maybe with a portable backdrop if the surroundings are poor and just offer to shoot these people as the event progresses, make sure that you have plenty of business cards with the web address and details clearly printed.
Back end sales

At the same time as placing all these newly shot images that you are putting on your website, why not consider adding the option of having merchandise printed with these same images on. There are a number of companies that will handle all of this for you.

Items such as mugs, key rings, T shirts and baseball caps can all be printed with slogans, or images from an event, have a small sample on your site and these again can lead to extra sales. It’s the old McDonalds marketing trick of “do you want fries with that”

The trick to making this work is to offer these items directly at the website and even at the website checkout, provide options as once a customer has made a purchase, they are far more likely to purchase again and even more likely to buy again if you make a further offer right there and then.

This is not rocket science, just time old, proven marketing techniques.

Try to tell a story. Any important event can become a picture story. An all-day outing is perfect for a photo story. Professional press photographers have a difficult job because they have to tell a complete story often within a single picture, so try to tell a story in a picture by using props or actions, even simulated actions (stunted or set up pictures).

Use fill flash to keep down facial shadows. On sunny days, if your camera has several flash modes, select Fill-Flash. This will fire the flash even in bright sunlight. This “fills” the shadows on nearby subjects, creating more flattering portraits in direct sunlight. You will definitely need this if your subject is wearing a cap or sun hat as these create strong shadows on the face.

Pre-focus your camera to make sure that the subject is in focus.

Show good camera manners but don’t get pushed out, most times you will have to wait for the official photographer to do his thing, try to shoot over his shoulder, without getting in his way. All the subjects should be looking at his camera and if you are just over his shoulder or under his arm, they will be looking at your camera too.

Candid pictures make good photographs at weddings but don’t overdo it. Catch the unexpected or just events that happen such as confetti throwing and they can make a difference. Confetti is best shot with the sun behind, but you will need to switch on your fill flash or you could well have a lot of silhouette’s in the pictures.

Use a low-light film such as a 400- or 800-speed film, an ideal choice to get a good picture in the dimly lit church, and it’ll also come in handy when you want to stop the action when photographing the bride getting ready, or dancing at the reception. Don’t worry about quality, most press pictures are often shot on 800 film and are great unless you want really large prints. Most digital cameras have a low light setting as well, but be careful as they could be simply slowing down the shutter speed and this could cause blurred pictures. Test first when using a digital.

If you prefer to get into wedding photography as a business, then you may prefer to concentrate on a photographer that has specialized in this field. Robert Provencher has been a portrait photographer for over 20 years and knows a thing or two about photography – Westmountphotography.com

Also, there is a Photographer that has alternative way make money from photography - Mark Davis. He has written a course that will teach you how to money from taking pictures of nudes for all sorts of differentmarkets.

This is an area that I never really explored but Mark has compiled some information that will be of interest to some of you. Take a look at his site here for more information.

Just think about it – the number of markets for this area are very large and well established. This won’t appeal to everyone,
but there are some people that would like to have a go. So if you feel that the girl next door photos are for you, hop on over to Marks website and see what you think.

Capture the candid moments, these take patience but are worth it as they will hopefully give a more natural look to your pictures.

Get down to their eye level – professional portraits tend to concentrate on the eyes and are often shot at eye level. So get low and shoot some photos from the child’s perspective. Expressions will look more natural, your flash photos will be more evenly lit all over, and the background will probably look a lot better, too. This also works great for pets!

Include friends, to capture more expressions. Kids relax more with their friends and will tend to mess around, but on the whole should give you good images.

This image was achieved by throwing the child’s Teddy on the floor and then bouncing the child on the teddy, it worked long enough to get a smile.

Take control of your picture-taking and watch your shots dramatically improve.

You must be in charge, not granny or mum or uncle but YOU! You must pick the location for your subject, you decide what looks good, only you can see what it looks like from where you are about to shoot from, not someone in the shot, so you decide. If your subject can’t move, then you move, but get it looking right.

You have to call out exactly what you want your subject to do, how you want them to pose, the facial expression, be creative here, pretend you are a big shot photographer, you will be surprised how responsive people are to someone who actually seems like they know what they are doing , even if its all pretend!

Make sure you know how to arrange people: “Now move in close, and lean toward the camera, look at me,
not over there”

Take charge of your pictures and win your own best picture awards.

One big key to better pictures is all in the pose your subject takes, so get some ideas by looking at modelling or fashion magazines. Just look through magazines, books and newspapers, see a pose you like and re-create it in your model’s pose when you shoot. You can also purchase photographic books that will help you to find better poses.

You can make improvements to images on the computer after the shot and is very common to do so nowdays. But if you are new to image editing software then you may need to take some help and advice.

One of the best ways to learn is to watch an instructional DVD, they are so easy and its much simpler to watch someone showing how to do something than it is to read about it. So, I have tracked down a great place to get instructional DVD’s on the award winning industry standard Adobe Photoshop.

First check out Profoto secrets, this guy is great and gives away a free mini course with some lessons and tips on the software.

Total Training offer New Advanced Adobe Photoshop CS Training. They also offer fantastic videos and occasionally have special offers. Apart from the subject, the most important part of every picture is the light. It affects the appearance of everything you photograph. When photographing a great-grandmother, bright sunlight from the side can enhance wrinkles. But the soft light of a cloudy day can subdue those same wrinkles.

Don’t like the light on your subject? Then move yourself or your subject.

For landscapes, try to take pictures early or late in the day when the light is orange-ish and rakes across the land. Lighting for portraits is especially good just as the sun goes down and the light becomes softer and has that lovely warm glow. We all look good in that light.

If you prefer, you can try to create that same warm glow with a reflector that has a coloured side, to reflect light back towards your subject’s face. There are a broad range of reflectors available from your local camera shop or online. Try these Reflectors from Amazon.

The number one flash mistake is taking pictures beyond the flash’s range. Why is this a mistake?

Because pictures taken beyond the maximum flash range will be too dark. For many cameras, the maximum flash range is less than fifteen feet – about five steps away. Even less for smaller compact cameras and some digital cameras.

What is your camera’s flash range? Look it up in your camera manual. Can’t find it? Then don’t take a chance. Position yourself so subjects are no farther than ten feet away. You can always try a film that is better suited for dark or low light conditions. Modern digital cameras have a simple menu that allows you to change the ISO setting. This is effectively like changing film speed. For those of you old enough to rememmer, thats what you had to do on a dark or overcast day, change the film completely to a film cartrideg with a higher ASA or ISO setting.

Modern films are superb and offer excellent quality even in low light. Did you know many professional’s shoot using very fast film at 800 ASA and get great results? Most newspapers used this type of film for many years until the digital revolution took hold. The ease of being able todo this with digital cameras is great but beware, as you increase the ISO setting on your camera, the quality of the image will drop off. The more expensive cameras provide better results at high ISO settings, but digital camera technology is moving at a rapid pace and the latest camera sensors are getting better and better.

Another very common mistake, especially with modern compact cameras. If your subject is not in the center of the picture, you need to lock the focus to create a sharp picture.

Most auto-focus cameras focus on whatever is in the center of the picture. But to improve pictures, you will often want to move the subject away from the center of the picture. This is known as the rule of thirds , more on this in the next chapter.

If you don’t want a blurred picture, you’ll need to first lock the focus with the subject in the middle and then re-compose the picture so the subject is away from the middle.

Usually you can lock the focus in three steps. First, center the subject in your viewfinder and press and hold the shutter button halfway down. Second, reposition your camera (while still holding the shutter button) so the subject is away from the center, off to one side. And third, finish by pressing the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.

Many cameras will now give an audible beep and or a visual indication when they have focused so some sort of a marker will indicate in a viewfinder that the camera has focused. Many cameras will do both.

continuous shootingmode Lock the Focus

Now you say “Oh I wondered what that little light was…”. With most digital cameras you will be able to see instantly the result that you will get if you lock your focus. If you haven’t done this, it may be a little tricky at first and you don’t need to actually take a picture to practice locking your camera’s focus.

Center-stage is a great place for a performer to be. However, the middle of your picture is not always the best place for your subject. Bring your photograph to life by simply moving your subject away from the middle of your shot.

You’ll need to lock the focus, if you have an auto-focus camera, because most of them focus on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder.

A college course would call this the “Rule of thirds”. Break your picture into 3 horizontal and 3 vertical planes while looking through your viewfinder. It doesn’t have to be 3 equal sections, and it can be vertical or horizontal.

Experiment with different angles and compositions to achieve very different results for the same scene.

Another way to explain this principle is to imagine three equal lines going both horizontally and vertically in your viewfinder. Simply situate your subject at or on these imaginary lines, rather than smack bang in the center of the viewfinder. Imagine placing the imaginary grid over the image as you look through the viewfinder.

thirds rule 11 The rule of thirds

This image of the children at Leeds castle in England is a typical family day out image. Instead of placing the subject smack bang in the middle of the frame, set them off center , to the right third. The castle in the background is in the upper third, all of which adds up to for a more appealing image.

The number one reason people don’t get ‘that’ picture is they are too embarrassed to move into a better position. They may be in someone’s view, especially in a church or public event. Step out, into the right spot and click away, its only for a second or two, then you’re gone. This is especially so at events such as kids school plays and graduation ceremonys.

If your subject is smaller than a car, take a step or two closer before taking the picture and zoom in on your subject. Your goal is to fill the picture area with the subject you are photographing. Test your camera to see how close you can focus without zooming, many new digital cameras have a macro facility for very close-up focusing, but this is usually only good for very close up work, so make sure you test this before an event.

Many events are one off so don’t miss that picture, someone may give you an uncomfortable look, but hey, you got a great picture! Are you one of those parents that take pictures from the back row of the school concert, over the top of the heads of all the other parents?

MOVE! Stand up walk to the end of the row and find a better position. Little Johnny will not be likely to dress as a fairy again in his next school play and its vital that you have an embarrassing picture to pull out at his 21st birthday party, right?

And for an even more impacting picture get closer, if you can. Many cameras have a good zoom lens, so use it. Human features are best portrayed on a lens of about 150mm. Excellent results can be gained using longer lenses still, but these are the sort that most professionals would have and are not always available. This backrow shooting distance is also slightly out of most compact cameras range but still try to use the lens at its longest range and shoot.
